Virginia Tech, the Coastal Division Champions of the ACC, will enter the game with a 10-2 record and a No. 12 national ranking after a loss in the inaugural ACC Championship. Louisville was ranked nationally at No. 15 after beating the University of Connecticut to finish their regular season at 9-2 and second in the Big East Conference. The Hokies and The Cardinals have met previously six times, with the Hokies winning four out of the six to the Card's two. The Cardinals won the last meeting 21-17 on October 10, 1992 in Louisville.

On January 1, 1946, the stadium emerged into the national spotlight with the advent of the first Gator Bowl Classic and the beginning of a new college football tradition. Because of the outstanding success of this postseason college football classic, in 1948 the stadium was expandedto 16,000 seats and given the name Gator Bowl. Originally seating 7,600, the old stadium, then called Fairfield Stadium, bears no resemblance to the $200 million, 73,000-seat stadium currently in the same location in Jacksonville.
